On Monday, October 26, the Turkish-American athlete, 34 — who last played in the NBA in 2022 on the Boston Celtics — posted a video on X in which he told the camera, "Hello everybody. Once again, I identify as a woman, and I cannot wait to be in the WNBA draft in 2027 with my friend."
The 55-year-old singer (real name: Robert James Ritchie), then appeared in the frame wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham , a hat, and holding a cup.
Cunningham, 30, has been vocal about wanting to protect "young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men," per ESPN .

"Yeah! Me too. I'm a woman also. I'm joining," Rock declared, to which Kanter Freedom exclaimed, "Kid Rock, baby, let's go."
"🚨BREAKING @KidRock has officially declared himself a woman and is joining me in the 2027 @WNBA Draft. Shaq and Kobe walked so we could run. From ROCK & ROLL to PICK & ROLL. 🎸🏀," Kanter Freedom captioned his post.
The video comes amid a continued debate about transgender athletes being allowed to compete in professional sports.
Kanter Freedom previously posted a social media video on August 7, saying, "If simply declaring who you are is all that's required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA."
In September, Kanter Freedom shared a statement with ESPN through a spokesperson at the America First Policy Institute: "Under the current WNBA rules, I am one of the most eligible players to be considered for the upcoming draft. I am not going to allow the league or the teams to conspire against me to deny me opportunities that their own collective bargaining agreement allows, nor am I going to allow the league or the arena to prevent freely exercising my First Amendment rights."
According to the outlet, the 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) notes that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA," but does not specify who the WNBA considers a woman or a process for transgender athletes. Additionally, similar clauses were in each of the league's six CBAs, since 1999.
