Netflix Ever thought of applying for a chance at finding true romance on Netflix’s long-running social experiment known as Love Is Blind ? Please be advised that there are a lot of rules the cast has to follow—and we don’t just mean agreeing to spend 10 days trapped in windowless “pods” talking to strangers. Check out 9 unbreakable rules the Love Is Blind cast have to follow once they join the show.
The “pods” portion of Love Is Blind takes ~10 days, and the cast are fully unplugged throughout the experience. Obviously this helps them focus completely on the task at hand (falling in love on camera), but also ensures they aren’t out there deep diving their connections—or finding their picture. As Love Is Blind’s co-creator Chris Coelen told Oprah Daily , "We took away their devices so there wouldn't be distractions.”
Coelen told The Hollywood Reporter that the show takes vetting very seriously, explaining, “We certainly vet people, and we do psychological testing—we do background checks and all of that—but we want to invite a broad array of people into the pods.”
A BuzzFeed contributor reported on their experience applying for the show, saying “The initial questionnaire for casting is 73 QUESTIONS LONG. Look, I get the incentive for making the barrier for application pretty high: It'll deter morons like me who are just in it because they're bored on a Sunday. That being said, I suspect that filling out this questionnaire sincerely will be a lengthier endeavor than writing some college papers.”
In other words: you have to really want to go on the show.
They even decide the order of the vows (sometimes said vows involve a breakup, and they’re trying to make good TV, after all!). Coelen confirmed this to Variety , “Generally, we will decide. We put our finger into the wind and see which way it’s blowing.”
Love Is Blind kicks off with an elaborate round of speed dating where the cast has to talk to everyone. From there, they’re allowed to decide who they want to spend time with—but only after everyone is given an 8-to-10-minute fair shot. Chris Coelen told E! News , “In the beginning, just from a practical standpoint, we have to give them certain time limits just so we can them through and they have a chance to talk to everyone...where they just got to know each other."
Former contestant Kenny Barnes told Refinery29 , “The first four days we filmed on average I'd say 18 to 20 hours. We slept in trailers and they were correctional facility beds. The design was to just strip us down from our comfort level.” (Note: the cast now sleeps at hotels.)
Back in Season 1, Coelen told Deadline “If you fell and love, and if you chose to get engaged, and if that proposal was accepted, then you would be allowed to see each other. Otherwise, you wouldn’t. And if you got engaged, your wedding date would be set in four weeks.”
Of course, once everyone leaves the pods single it’s up to them if they want to meet up away from cameras.
The contestants aren’t styled by the show, and are 100 percent in charge of their own packing—including reveal gowns!
As Jackie put it to Tudum back in 2023, “I’m a late packer. I packed the night before. I’m not the type where I am going to stress out. My producer, she had to get on me. She was like, ‘Have you packed?!’ I’m like, ‘No, I haven’t packed yet.’ She FaceTimed me at 6:00 p.m. the night before and she’s like, ‘OK, we’re packing.’ So I’m just showing her little things in my closet saying, ‘Is this good enough?’ ‘Yeah, throw it in.’ I'm the type where I’m just going to make anything work, so I wasn’t stressed out. My reveal dress, though, I was like, ‘I need to be up to par. I need to be top-tier. I need to be on my A-game.’ So I was like, ‘I’m a fresh blonde. Let me just go ahead and get a doo-doo brown dress.’ So I went and ordered me a brown dress and I got brown heels. I just threw it on and that was it.”
Coelen explained to Variety that they’re the show’s signature, saying, “I don’t know, it’s something I like. When you turn on the show, you know it’s our show. It’s a very authentic, really true following of these people’s journeys, but I like the fact that we have this sort of connective tissue with that in a really light way, it’s fun.”
